CLASSICAL DANCE
To this day, the best way form one's body while acquiring grace and precision is, without a doubt, the classical technique. Over 400 years old, its codification still remains at this time the stable reference point for any professional dancer. Especially adapted and designed for the need of our students, their age groups and experience level, our classical dance classes give our young dancers a precise and meticulous ballet posture training and teach proper body placement and alignment, as well as the ability to master the various basic steps, the arm movements plus the development of an adequate muscle memory so as to achieve an even greater body control.
The strictness of the workout at the bar followed by center adagio* used for the development of equilibrium and strength, the turns and jumps, the exactness of the ports de bras** and the gradual approach of that style can't help but enrich the student's awareness and experience as a dancer on all aspects.
*a sequence of well-controlled, graceful movements performed as a display of skill) Random House Unabridged Dictionary
**French: “carriage of the arms”), in classical ballet, both the general arm movements of a dancer and a designated set of exercises designed to improve the quality of these movements. The port de bras of classical ballet is meant to be a graceful and harmonious accent to the movements of the legs. The position of the dancer’s head and shoulders (épaulement) is important to the total grace of the port de bras. The arms together have five basic positions, and each one singly has five positions.
